INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE PROMOTION OF READING: “READ, OR BE LOST FOR WORDS“

The  Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia organizes an International conference on the promotion of reading Read, or be lost for words (Čitajmo da ne ostanemo bez riječi). The conference will take place on 12th October 2021 in Zagreb, Croatia.

The Conference objective is the affirmation of reading culture and challenges we are facing today, such as the declining interest in books and reading, new ways of reading in the digital environment, insufficient literacy competence, adoption and development of reading habits and development of competent readers.

Since reading is one of the preconditions for cultural participation, it directly and indirectly influences improvement of the overall quality of life of both an individual as well as of the society as a whole, which is of great importance in the current circumstances. 
 
The Conference speakers will be foreign lecturers, world-renowned experts in the area of reading promotion, international and Croatian scientists who will reflect on the issue at hand providing their personal views and new perspectives, as well as encouraging the new ways of affirming reading in the society.

Conference speakers:

  • Dr. Maryanne Wolf, Director of the Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners, and Social Justice at the UCLA University (USA);

  • Dr. Adriaan van der Weel, Professor Emeritus by special appointment of Book and Digital Media Studies, University of Leiden (Netherlands);

  • Sabine Uehlein, Director of Programmes and Projects at the Reading Promotion Foundation in Mainz (Germany);

  • Dr. Anita Peti Stantić, Professor and Head of the Chair of Slovenian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb (Croatia);

  • Dr. Miha Kovač, Professor at the Department of Library and Information Science and Book Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Ljubljana (Slovenia);

  • Joanna Kaźmierczak, Specialist Researcher at the Institute for Educational Research in Warsaw, PISA, PIRLS and TIMSS National Project Manager (Poland).

Participation at the Conference is open to all teachers, educators, cultural institutions employees, artists and cultural workers, as well as all those interested in promotion of reading and developing a readership.

Participation is free, registration for the Conference will be available at the Ministry of Culture, and Media webpage. The Conference will be held online (Zoom platform).
